Laurie’s Community Garden is located at the corner of Vine and North Irving streets in The Hill Section of Scranton. The garden is named for a woman who lost her life in a fire on that property in 1999. Since 2009, a community garden has been growing more than food in this neighborhood. It has ten garden plots that are subscribed by community residents who grow vegetables and flowers. In 2011, Laurie's Community Garden partnered with the Everhart Museum for an exhibit to demonstrate the impacts of this community garden in the city neighborhood.
Our newest community gem is The Garden at Myrtle & Monroe also located in The Hill Section of Scranton. This garden began in 2015 as a land gift from Declan Mulhall and a grant from The United Way of Lackawanna County. This garden has more than a dozen individual plots and continues to grow! The garden also includes several plots dedicated to growing fresh food for the local food pantries.
These gardens are an asset to the neighborhood as they bring the community together and foster important social interaction. The garden subscribers have included many long-term Scranton residents, as well as a number of recent area newcomers from central Africa, Bhutan, Nepal, Mexico and Barbados. Among them are teachers and artists, professionals, skilled laborers, retirees and children.
The Greenhouse Project sponsors free organic gardening education programs to the public through the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners at various times.
These two gardens host an annual fundraising event --Garden Party-- to raise funds, purchase supplies, tools, etc.. If you are interested in participating in the garden or wish to offer your support or donation, please email the Garden Manager, at: email@example.com.
